American Abyss - Week 1
We're now one week into our Kickstarter campaign for American Abyss! It's been a great week, but if we're going to make this project happen we still need your help!
You might have seen our first episode on YouTube, or on the SCP Archives feed - but there's a lot more to dive into! This week, I want to highlight our "Speddy Bear" collection.
In Palmyra, evolution is rapidly occurring, which has given rise to new and mutated species all across the exclusion zone. But, somewhere in a department store, or a daycare, hides a new threat.
- Dr. Rutridge's Report, Kurdizov Industries
These horrifying little monsters were created by Nic Boone. Often times in art, we have these fun ideas, but we can't find a home for them. Nic's been carrying around Speddy Bears for several years, and didn't know where to put them, they just knew the world had to see these horrible little monsters. And, thanks to the skilled photo-bashing of Eduardo Valdes-Hevia, we were able to turn Nic's illustrations into horrifying photo-realistic monsters!
Once the monster was created, we had to find a life for it in Palmyra. That's where our trustworthy writer Ben Counter comes in! Ben took one look at these creepy crawlies, and knew exactly what to do. What you're about to hear is the culmination of all these great minds put together.

Much of American Abyss is created in the same manner: one artist will suggest an idea, or bring a monster to the group, and from there it snowballs into something bigger. Speddy Bears became an easy choice for one of our pilot episodes, as it captures a side of the Palmyra Exclusion Zone that I thought my listeners (you) would resonate with.
First, we have an elusive science organization going into a restricted area to scavenge, and collect samples. While Kurdizov is a long shot from something like SCP's "Foundation," they still have that same fervent energy to find an explanation for everything. In our episode Dr. Rutridge, a lowly Kurdizov scientist, grapples with exactly that. The struggle to classify and tame something that is so alien and unknowable to us. She does an alright job, all things considered, but not without dire consequence.

Here you can see Nic's original illustrations side by side with Ed's photo-bashing & rendering.
